Career Description
Job Duration: May 1st - September 27th. Start and end dates are negotiable, and hours are flexible! Part-time and full-time positions are available according to applicants' preference.The historical interpreter will execute their responsibilities with a positive attitude, neat appearance, and enthusiasm. The successful applicant will: Actively listen to visitors, answer their questions, welcome and orient them, lead hands-on activities, and conduct guided tours. Interpret site history enjoyably and accurately by making use of research and training. Assess and provide for visitors' special needs, such as appropriate services for the elderly, handicapped, and foreign visitors.Provide excellent customer service. Clean and tidy facilities including work areas, public areas, and bathrooms. Perform other light maintenance tasks which might include watering and weeding outdoor plantings, dusting, and emptying trash receptacles. Assist with store operations that includes keeping merchandise neatly displayed and dusted, keeping track of inventory, and operating and reconciling a cash register, while following policies and procedures. Familiarize visitors with the mission of the State Historical Society and other historical sites.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be at least 16 years of age. Ability to communicate with groups and individuals of diverse ages, interests, and perspectives, using appropriate language and hands-on skills. Ability to learn site history. Ability to work flexible hours including weekends, holidays, and some evenings Ability to accurately complete required forms such as timesheets, till counts, etc. All applicants are responsible for their own housing. About Fort Totten State Historic Site Originally built as a military fort in 1867, Fort Totten was later converted into an Indian boarding school. Starting at the Visitors Center, guests are guided along the boardwalk on a tour of some of the best-preserved military buildings in the United States. Museum exhibits and window displays describe the military and boarding school history of both the fort and the surrounding area.
