The Pilot Internship Program (PIP) includes the following areas of involvement and responsibility during the NDCMP (North Dakota Cloud Modification Program): Duties of a regular crew member, both on the ground and in the air; Record keeping of all seeding events, times and materials expended; Maintenance of seeding equipment and materials; General aircraft maintenance; Conduct of seeding missions according to project guidelines; Visual surveillance of the weather; Representing the project to the public; and other duties as required to meet project objectives. Operations are conducted around the clock, seven days per week, as weather conditions dictate.Intern Co Pilots may be required to rotate to another base for cloud top seeding experience and must be able to transport themselves to other bases. A pre-project ground school and orientation will be conducted in Fargo, ND on May 28-30, 2025; all project personnel are required to attend. There will be an ice-breaker social the evening of May 27th. The field phase of the project begins at noon on June 1, 2025 and continues as weather dictates, 24-hours a day, seven days a week, through the project's conclusion on August 31, 2025. Allowance will be made for interns needing to return to school during the latter half of August. Interns are allowed to take unpaid vacation during the project, to a maximum of 7 days. However, only 1 intern is authorized to be gone at a time, so all requests may not be granted.

Minimum Qualifications

University of North Dakota Aviation student with multi-engine commercial instrument rating completed by April 30, 2025.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of AtSc 252 Applied Weather Modification class is preferred. Motivation, flight hours, and related work experience may also be considered.

Aircraft CommanderAct as Pilot-in-Command or Second-in-Command to provide aerial transportation for state employees, conduct aerial photography and mapping.

This position works with the Ground Water Protection Program in the Division of Water Quality. The Groundwater Protection Program focuses its efforts on preventing contamination of groundwater through programs designed to control potential sources of contamination. We also work to restore groundwater that has been polluted.Responsibilities of the position include:Providing technical oversight for site characterization and remedial action activities at contaminant release/spill sites, including data interpretation and evaluations of geologic and hydrogeologic conditions, contaminant levels and associated potential health risks, and appropriate remedial alternatives.Conducting inspections of underground injection wells regulated by the Underground Injection Control ProgramCoordinating and assisting in groundwater sampling activities completed in conjunction with the Ambient Groundwater Monitoring Programs, including well sampling, equipment calibration and maintenance, and data entry and reporting.Completing source water protection area delineations and contaminant source inventories as part of the Source Water Protection ProgramDeveloping Quality Assurance Project Plans (QAPP), Field Sampling Plans (FSP), and Standard Operating Procedures for water quality sampling projects in North DakotaMaintaining clear and open communication with local, state, and federal agencies (e.g., US EPA, NRCS, DWR, NDGF)Responding to pollution incidents (e.g., contaminant spills or releases) and complaints, as needed.Field work and/or meeting attendance with overnight travel is a part of these positions and can occur during any time of the year. Fieldwork may require working in physically demanding situations (e.g., heat, cold, rain, and wind), the moving of heavy objects, traversing uneven terrain, and operating sampling equipment (e.g., sampling pumps, meters, sample coolers).

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for an Environmental Scientist II, you must have a bachelor's degree in natural or physical science with emphasis in biology, chemistry, microbiology, environmental science, or closely related field and two years of related experience. DEQ starting salary range for Environmental Scientist II is $5,120/month, depending on experience. To be considered for an Environmental Scientist I, you must have a bachelor's degree in natural or physical science with emphasis in biology, chemistry, microbiology, environmental science, or closely related field. DEQ starting salary range for Environmental Scientist I is $4,288/month, depending on experience. This position requires individual to possess a valid driver's license.

Ability to review, interpret, and apply environmental regulations.Strong oral and written communication skills.Strong ability to work both as a team and individually.Site assessment and remediation experienceTechnical/scientific report writing.Knowledge on the use of computers, with emphasis on Word, WordPerfect, Excel, and Access.
