Planning is a continuous process at NDDOT. To ensure all plans are aligned, we develop each plan using a family of plans approach. All plans stem from the Strategic Business Plan and support our long-range transportation plan, Transportation Connection.

Transportation Connection

Transportation Connection is the foundational piece of NDDOT's family of plans. It provides a roadmap to guide us toward accomplishing our transportation goals: keeping you safe, caring for what we have, connecting North Dakota, helping you get there, and investing for the future.

The current plan is the result of a collaborative effort involving all levels of government, transportation providers, users and stakeholders, and the state's citizens.

This statewide plan provides broad, long-term direction for the development of the state's transportation system. This plan also qualifies North Dakota to receive federal highway funding and supports grant applications.

ND State Freight & Rail Plan

The North Dakota State Freight & Rail Plan assesses all freight modes, identify needs and issues, provide recommendations for policies, programs, processes, and identify potential projects that improve efficiency, reliability and safety. The plan relies on private sector shippers and carriers, state and local agencies and public input to direct future freight and rail transportation in the state.

Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Plan

The Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Infrastructure Plan creates a network of EV fast chargers across the country that provides reliable and consistent infrastructure to support long distance travel. For North Dakota, the first phase of the program will build chargers no more than 50 miles apart and less than one mile off exits along I-94 and I-29 (Alternate Fuel Corridors).

ND Moves

The Statewide Active and Public Transportation Plan, ND Moves, is the first strategic plan in the US to address personal mobility connecting public transit, walking and bicycling. The plan identifies needs and opportunities across the transportation spectrum for all users. ND Moves serves as a guide and a resource for accommodating active and public transportation in the development of state and local transportation systems and programs.

Transportation Asset Management Plan

Adopted in June 2019, the Transportation Asset Management Plan assists the NDDOT in strategically prioritizing investments in the transportation system and defining levels of service to be provided and maintained.
