US Highway 52 is a two-lane highway running diagonally across North Dakota. Starting in the northwest corner of the state, the 362-mile roadway weaves its way to the southeast corner. With the increase in traffic on US 52, there is a need to make improvements and expand the roadway in the years to come. Efforts include the development and implementation of the following study, projects, and grant:
- Four-Lane Study: A NDDOT study of the potential expansion of US Highway 52 from a two-lane to a four-lane highway along a 21.5-mile stretch between Minot and Voltaire. Funded by a $5 million allocation from the 2023 legislative session, the study includes engineering, traffic analysis, environmental reviews, and public engagement. Alternatives being considered include divided four-lane designs with either a depressed or flush paved median, as well as options through Velva.
- Passing Lanes Projects: Spanning a 221-mile corridor from the ND/Canadian border at Portal to Carrington, the US Highway 52 Passing Lanes Projects, are focused on enhancing safety and reducing delays with passing lanes approximately every ten miles. The projects include 40 passing lanes and turn lanes at nine intersections. These improvements support safer travel and better traffic flow for industry and the public.

Multimodal Project Discretionary Grant
Awarded Fall 2024 by the U.S. Department of Transportation
Grant Amount: $20 Million | Total Cost: $40 Million
The NDDOT recently received a grant to enhance the US Highway 52 corridor. The grant will assist with funding three roadway improvement projects described below:
- A mill and overlay project that will rehabilitate 45 miles of existing asphalt pavement from west of Drake to Fessenden. The purpose of the project is to protect the pavement structure, extend the service life, and correct pavement surface deficiencies.
- A project that will add acceleration and deceleration lanes at six railroad crossings from Portal to Carrington and turn lanes at three critical intersections near the cities of Velva, Bergen, and Anamoose. The improvements at railroad crossings include the construction of an additional lane for trucks hauling hazardous material and passenger busses to pull out of the main lane of traffic, stop at the railroad crossing, accelerate, and merge back into traffic. The project will also improve traffic operations at three intersections by adding right and left turn lanes.
- A roadway improvement project to consolidate access points at the intersection of US 52 and ND 3 at Harvey. The purpose is to improve safety and traffic operations at the multi-leg intersection. Improvements include the removal and realignment of access points to improve intersection sight lines.
