BISMARCK, N.D. – The North Dakota Department of Transportation will begin reconstruction of the Interstate 94 Exit 161 interchange on May 15. The reconstruction is a multi-year project with a 2026 completion.
Starting May 15, Bismarck Expressway/Centennial Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction from Miriam Avenue to Trenton Drive. I-94 will also be reduced to one lane in each direction from Mile Marker 161 to Mile Marker 162. Motorists should expect delays.
During the 2024 construction season, work will mainly consist of placing embankment for the new bridge, bridge abutments and piers, temporary loop ramps, and temporary lighting. Lane closures will be in place throughout the summer. Work will continue until late November 2024, then resume in spring of 2025.
North-south traffic will be maintained on Centennial Road/Bismarck Expressway and I-94 throughout the entirety of the project by utilizing lane closures.
The Exit 161 reconstruction project will improve traffic flow in the growing northeast Bismarck community. The modified single point urban interchange (SPUI) design will remove two left-turn movements and provide loops for easier right-turn movements. NDDOT will work to educate the public on how to use the new interchange closer to its completion.
Construction and traffic updates can be found at the project’s dedicated webpage, dot.nd.gov/exit161.
The North Dakota Department of Transportation would like to remind motorists to slow down and use caution throughout the work zone.
