BISMARCK, N.D. – Starting Monday, April 15, lane closures will be in effect on the Grant Marsh Bridge as repairs and improvements are underway. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane in either direction until the project is completed by late-October. The on-ramp for Eastbound Interstate 94 traffic from Bismarck Expressway will be closed starting April 15 until the project is completed. A detour to Mandan Avenue at Exit 153 will be in place.
Contractors are making repairs and improvements to structural steel beneath the bridge, concrete on the bridge deck, guardrails, approach slabs, and lighting. Construction equipment is staged at the base of the bridge on the Bismarck and Mandan sides of the Missouri River.
Westbound and eastbound passing lanes will be closed April 15 through 16, as sections of the median barrier are removed.
Beginning April 17, traffic will switch to head-to-head on the westbound structure. Westbound traffic for Exit 156 will transition onto eastbound I-94 at the crossover and use a temporary ramp constructed last fall.
Later in the summer, traffic will be moved to the eastbound structure, but will remain head-to-head until the project is completed.
During construction, the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) is working with area businesses and organizations to reduce impacts as much as possible. Portions of the Missouri River Nature trail in Mandan will be closed for staging of construction equipment. Parking will remain available at Keelboat Park for patrons of the Huckleberry House, Lewis & Clark Riverboat, and the Northern Plains Heritage Foundation.
NDDOT will take appropriate environmental measures to mitigate impacts to endangered species of birds and bats that may nest or roost in the underside of the deck. NDDOT is also taking preventative measures to keep migratory birds from nesting on the structure.
NDDOT is working in collaboration with Northern Plains Heritage Foundation to preserve and protect the Missouri River Heritage Mural painted on Pier 5.
During construction, speeds will be reduced to 40 mph in work zones.
The NDDOT would like to remind motorists to slow down and use caution throughout the work zone.
