Federal Transportation Grant Programs
NDDOT views the statewide transportation system as a single integrated system, regardless of mode or infrastructure ownership.
NDDOT provides the content of this site as a service to our many transportation partners. It is only a summary and should not be solely relied upon to apply for a federal grant.
Please read and understand the applicable Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) and federal regulations before applying for any specific grant opportunity.
General Grant Advice and Information
The following are key points to consider. Review NDDOT Grant Preparation and Management Advice for full details.
- Read the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) in detail.
- Apply for grant submittal system logins and entity identification numbers now.
- Select a project that fits the grant criteria. See NDDOT Grant Preparation for some helpful hints.
- All federal transportation funding requires National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) clearance for construction activities. As noted in the PDF linked above, some grants will fund NEPA activities.
- Request letters of support early.
- Provide an example template letter for constituents to use when preparing their letters of support.
- For large projects, it is helpful to put project talking points on a one-page marketing piece with graphics depicting your project goals that you can share with supporting organizations and politicians.
- Notify NDDOT and the local USDOT modal agency office after an application is submitted.
Local agencies preparing a federal grant application and who are requesting NDDOT support must complete the online checklist. This form allows NDDOT to assess requests in advance of grant due dates.
