BISMARCK, N.D. – The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) launched a new science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education program today to promote interest in transportation careers.

STEM Outreach Solutions is a hands-on educational program, with a focus on civil engineering, designed for use in STEM classrooms grades 9-12. Class instruction is aligned with national standards.

“STEM education is very important for the future of our transportation system,” said NDDOT Director Ron Henke. “We are excited for this program to get started and are looking forward to partnering with local schools in North Dakota to promote transportation careers.”

The NDDOT recently met with teachers at the North Dakota CTE Professional Development Conference to present and demonstrate STEM modules that are available to schools at no cost.

Modules include bridge design, design and construction, environmental engineering, and traffic engineering and highway safety.

The hands-on activities introduce students to the work of transportation and civil engineering and inspire them to consider careers in those fields.

Educators will implement and teach the modules in their classrooms. NDDOT and consultant engineers will work with educators to visit classrooms to serve as speakers, teach a hands-on activity, and/or talk to students about the importance of math and science in preparing for their future.
