Construction season is here

The 2024 construction season is off and running! Several large projects around the state have begun thanks to a mild winter and favorable spring conditions, and more are starting in the next few weeks.

Did you know? Our ND Roads travel map travel.dot.nd.gov is a great tool for planning road trips with your family and friends this season. You can access information about all NDDOT projects statewide by turning on the “work zones” button under the layers menu. Click on any orange-highlighted road or diamond for further information on that specific project.

This site has all the same information as our ND Roads app, which you can download for free from the App store or Google Play. So much great information at your fingertips!

Mark your calendars for our summer construction and safety news conference, which will be live streamed on our Facebook page at 11 a.m. on May 23.

See you on the road!

100 years of the North Dakota Highway Map!

Did you know… 2024 marks 100 years since the first official North Dakota State Highway Map? In honor of this exciting marker in time, members of the mapping section in NDDOT’s Planning/Asset Management Division have created a story map blog series. Each month, a new blog is shared on our website highlighting a specific topic relating to the ND Highway Map and its history.

Readers will learn about things like early transportation in North Dakota, the growth of our railway system, how Lake Sakakawea changed the landscape, and so much more!

So, sit back, relax, and get ready to travel back in time with us!

Check out the 100th anniversary blog here!

Keep North Dakota Clean, one highway at a time

Keep ND Clean (KNDC) was formed in 1968 to provide statewide education on litter control and state beautification. KNDC holds an annual statewide poster and media contest for kids in Pre-K through high school believing that in order for the program to be successful the education process needs to begin early. The NDDOT sponsors the 1st grade level theme “Keep ND Highways Clean.” This year Weston Koenig of Park River, ND was the 1st place winner and will be able to see his artwork featured on a roadside billboard near his community courtesy of KNDC sponsor, Newman Signs. Weston and the other award winners were recognized at a banquet on May 3 to celebrate their creativity and promote the KNDC mission.

The NDDOT believes strongly in the mission of KNDC and continues efforts with our Adopt-a-Highway Program. The premise behind the anti-litter program is to encourage groups to “adopt” a segment of state highway in their area and agree to take care of litter control for a three-year period. This helps keep our state roadways beautiful, increases environmental safety, keeps our roadway maintenance costs down and promotes community pride and ownership of the area. We are all proud of our magnificent ND scenery but keeping our highway scenes pristine need help.

If you or your organization would like to become a sponsor for Keep North Dakota Clean, please contact Emilee Novak at 701-328-5240 or email kndc.artcontest@gmail.com to request a sponsorship form. If you are interested in getting more information about the Adopt-a-Highway Program please visit the NDDOT’s website to find out how to get involved: Adopt-A-Highway | NDDOT

Coffee shops partner with Vision Zero to promote seat belt use

Coffee shops across the state are hosting representatives from Vision Zero and local law to encourage seat belt use in exchange for coffee with Click It for Coffee events throughout the month of May to coincide with the statewide Click It or Ticket enforcement campaign that ends June 2.

The first Click It for Coffee was held at Minot’s Broadway Bean and Bagel on May 1. Keep an eye out for these upcoming events to participate:

  • Wednesday, May 22: Sandy’s Donuts & Coffee Shop, West Fargo
  • Friday, May 24: Crossroads Coffee, Devils Lake

View each location’s details, including their incentive for wearing a seat belt, at VisionZero.ND.gov.

April is in full swing, and so are our roadside heroes!

As spring blossoms, so does our commitment to clean roadsides. Our dedicated crews and enthusiastic volunteers are on a mission to banish winter’s leftovers from our ditches, armed with trash bags, gloves, and a hefty dose of determination.

While we tackle the unsightly mess left by winter's departure, safety remains our top priority: please remember to move into the left lane to avoid any vehicle parked on the shoulder. High-visibility gear and flashing lights aren’t just a fashion statement—they’re our lifeline!

So, here's to a spring season filled with cleaner roads, brighter smiles, and maybe a few unexpected roadside treasures (hey, one person's trash is another person's... well, still trash, but you get the idea). Stay safe out there, North Dakota!

REAL ID deadline reminder

REAL ID deadline reminder

We would like to remind citizens about the upcoming deadline to obtain a REAL ID compliant driver’s license or identification card.

Beginning May 7, 2025, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a REAL ID compliant driver’s license, or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the United States.

REAL ID is a federal mandate to improve the reliability and accuracy of driver licenses and identification cards.

To get a REAL ID, citizens must visit a North Dakota Driver’s License office in person.

“We have same day appointments at most locations, and it is a very quick process once you have the documents,” said Brad Schaffer, NDDOT driver license director. “We encourage everyone to come in now and not wait.”

North Dakota is currently above national average with 60% of citizens REAL ID compliant.
