Fargo Drivers License Office to undergo renovation; Written tests moved to temporary site

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) Drivers License office in Fargo will start a major renovation project this week. The one-year project will add customer service windows and increase lobby space to improve customer service at the Fargo Driver’s License Office.

Due to construction, beginning Monday, August 5, all written knowledge tests and CDL hazardous materials knowledge tests will be conducted at a temporary location. The temporary testing site is located off-site at the North Dakota State College of Science Building (NDSCS) Fargo location located at 1305 19th Avenue North, Room 127 in Fargo.

All other drivers license transactions such as standard license renewals, REAL IDs and road tests will remain at the current Fargo office located at 503 38th Street South in Fargo. Additional customer service windows and staffing will be provided at the current Fargo Drivers License office during the renovation project.

During the renovation project, Fargo Drivers License customers will not be able to make appointments for written knowledge testing. Written tests will be given on a first-come, first-serve walk-in basis at the temporary location. Hours of operation at the temporary written knowledge testing site will be Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.- 4 p.m.

The Governor and Legislature recently approved $22 Million in NDDOT’s budget to update the Drivers License computer system and the state is moving forward in implementing the new technology over the next couple of years. NDDOT has added many technology tools recently including Motor Vehicle Renewal kiosks located across the state, online renewals for drivers license and track a plow for snowplowing operations.

According to NDDOT Drivers License Division Director, Brad Schaffer, customers are asked to plan ahead when doing business at either location. “We ask for your patience while this site is under construction and we will do our best to accommodate customers during the renovation process,” says Schaffer. “We also want people to be aware there are many driver’s license items that can be done online and your license will be mailed to you so you don’t need to visit the office.”

Things you can do online to save time:

  • Renew a standard vehicle or motorcycle drivers license online, if over 21 and under the age of 65 and you don’t want a REAL ID.
  • Change your address.
  • Replace a lost, stolen or damaged ND license.
  • Replace a vertical driver’s license after you are 21 to a horizontal driver’s license.
  • Schedule an appointment to get a REAL ID. Online renewal is not applicable when obtaining a REAL ID.
  • Schedule a driving test.
  • Schedule an appointment to renew a ND license, permit, or ID card.
