Construction projects begin next week in southwest corner of the state

Beginning Monday, July 16, a number of road construction projects will begin in the southwest corner of the state. These projects consist of chip sealing, which is a thin film of heated asphalt liquid that is sprayed on the road surface followed by placement of small aggregates (chips). The chips are gradually compacted by traffic traveling over the roadway for maximum adherence to the asphalt.

Construction will take place on the following roadways:
  • ND Hwy 21 – Between New England and Jct of ND 67 (2 short segments of approximately ½ mile)
  • ND Hwy 67 – 9 Miles North of Scranton to Jct of ND 21 (Approximately 19 miles)

  • ND Hwy 22 – From Jct of US 12 near Reeder to South Dakota Border (Approximately 12 miles)

  • US Hwy 12 – From Hettinger east to South Dakota Border (Approximately 14 miles)

  • US Hwy 85 – From Bowman to South Dakota Border (Approximately 17 miles)

During construction:

  • Speeds will be reduced to 55 mph through the work zone

  • Flaggers will be present in the work zone

  • Pilot cars will be on site directing traffic through the work zone

  • Oil may be present on the roadway

  • Motorists can expect short delays and should plan accordingly

  • Motorists may want to consider alternative routes

These projects are expected to be complete in early August. The NDDOT would like to remind motorists to slow down and use caution throughout the work zone.
