NDDOT offers tips for citizens when utilizing driver’s license services

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) Driver’s License Division is experiencing a busy summer as many students are taking driving tests. Other factors in the upswing in business may include residents updating their license before voting and the new issuance of REAL IDs. Due to these factors and others the wait time at our offices may increase. To try to keep up with demand, many driver’s license locations are providing service beyond regularly scheduled hours. Staff have been staying into the evening and working on weekends to provide testing and the NDDOT is continuing to explore long-term improvements and solutions.

The NDDOT would like to provide information to customers to make your experience while visiting a driver’s license office a better one. The NDDOT has implemented several tools to help you conduct business online:

  1. You can now renew your standard driver’s license online. This is not applicable to the REAL IDs. If you would like to simply renew your standard driver’s license, you can do so online: It’s fast, easy and your license gets mailed to you within 10 days without ever leaving your home. As a reminder, drivers may renew their license 10 months in advance of the expiration date.

  2. Schedule your service online: Schedule your driving test, issue of REAL ID, license renewal/replacement, etc. Scheduling your appointment will greatly reduce your wait time when you come into the office.

  3. Check the wait times prior to coming into the office: Wait times at our main office locations are online.

The NDDOT is looking at additional ways to enhance service at our driver’s license locations. We understand the need to provide fast, efficient service and want to make your experience as easy as possible.
