What is a REAL ID compliant credential?
A REAL ID compliant credential meets the federal standards for physical security and verification of identity and legal presence in the United States. It also serves as valid form of federal identification. The driver’s license and identification card issued by the NDDOT is the REAL ID credential for the state.
Do you need a REAL ID compliant credential?
The current North Dakota driver’s license and identification card are valid forms of federal identification as North Dakota has received appropriate waivers for compliance. However, beginning October 2020, all persons will need to have federally approved identification, such as a REAL ID or passport, to enter federal facilities or board a domestic flight.
If you know you will not be boarding a domestic flight or entering a federal facility or military base you do not need to obtain a REAL ID compliant credential and can opt-out of the program.
How do you get a REAL ID compliant credential?
Getting a REAL ID compliant credential is just like applying for a new driver’s license or identification card. You must present documents that establish your identity and date of birth, Social Security number, residency and residential address, any name changes and that prove that you are lawfully in the United States.
A list of those required documents can be found on our website and on the attached document: https://www.dot.nd.gov/divisions/driverslicense/real-id-information.htm#requireddocinfo
It doesn’t matter how long you’ve held a North Dakota driver’s license or identification card, every applicant for a REAL ID compliant credential must provide the required documents. However, you do not have to take a driving test or knowledge test.
What does a REAL ID compliant credential look like?
A North Dakota REAL ID credential looks nearly identical to a current driver’s license or identification card with the only difference being a star for verification in the upper right-hand corner if you opt in, or a statement that the credential is “NOT FOR FEDERAL IDENTIFICATION” if you opt out. The star indicates to federal screening officials that the person’s identity has been verified according to federal standards.
Is there an added cost for a REAL ID?
No, there is no additional cost. You will only be charged current fees.
How long is a REAL ID valid?
You will only need to bring in your documents one time to receive a REAL ID compliant credential. Once the initial process is completed your REAL ID credential will follow the regular renewal cycle, depending on what type of credential it is, a commercial license, non-commercial license, or identification card.
Remember, your unexpired, standard North Dakota driver’s license or identification card is a valid form of identification for boarding domestic flights or to enter federal facilities until October 2020.
