NDDOT launches online renewal for driver’s license

North Dakota residents can now renew their driver’s license online. The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) launched this new online tool Monday, August 14 for eligible drivers who meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a North Dakota driver’s license (Class D and/or Class M)

  • Are between the ages of 21 and 65 and have previously renewed in person after turning 21

  • No changes in address or name than what appears on your current driver’s license or driver record

  • Online renewals are available to citizens every other renewal cycle. Current renewal cycle is six years.

“This new service allows residents to renew their driver’s license at any time of day without having to come into a driver’s license office,” says Glenn Jackson, NDDOT Drivers License Director. “This is a fast and convenient tool many of our residents can utilize for their basic driver’s license renewal needs.”

The online system is NOT available if any of these apply to you:

  • Age 65 or older

  • Under the age of 21

  • Renewing for the first time since issuance of a license after age 21

  • Any information has changed from what appears on your current license or driver record file

  • Hold a license from somewhere other than North Dakota

To renew, go to https://apps.nd.gov/dot/dlts/dlos/renewal/welcome.htm and have your current driver’s license available to fill out the online forms which includes:

  • Driver information as well as issue date and expiration of current driver’s license.

  • Medical questions. Those who have a prescription for vision must include vision screening results from your doctor that was completed within the last six months.

  • Billing information to pay the $15 driver’s license renewal fee (fee is the same amount online and in person).

You will receive a confirmation email and your new driver’s license will be mailed to you within 10 business days at the address on file.

The online driver’s license renewal service is one of several customer-focused services the NDDOT has implemented to make it easier for citizens to receive services. Other programs include NDRoads app, ND Renewals app, and kiosks for vehicle renewals.

For more information about the online renewal process including Frequently Asked Questions, go to dot.nd.gov. If you do not receive your driver’s license within 10 business days please call 701-328-4353.
